Holiday Wreath Making Class

Saturday November 26, 2022 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM

Join us to learn how to make your own holiday wreath to decorate your home or give as a gift.

The class will include all the supplies you need to make a 12″ wreath, including a variety of hand selected decorations to make it our own. You will learn how to make bundles of greens to create your wreath, add personal touches like pinecones and berries, and finish it off by making your own bow. This is a fun class for people of all ages and skillsets!

How to Make a Kissing Ball

Saturday November 26, 2022 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM

Kissing balls were first used as “holy boughs” in medieval times and would be hung from the ceiling along passageways in castles and big houses to render blessings and good luck to all who passed under. Back then, the center would contain a figure of baby Jesus. This class will teach you how to make your own kissing ball to decorate your holiday home and bring good luck to you and all who pass near.

During this class you will be using evergreen tips to make your kissing ball as well as some pinecones and red berries for decoration. If you have a favorite pair of gloves and pruners, please bring them along, your hands can get some pitch on them. We will have gloves and pruners available if you don’t have them yourself.

Knight Story Time

Join us for the telling of two medieval Christmas stories:

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight & The Tomtin and the Fox

These stories will be told to us by Matt Blazek from History Live! North East while dressed in a suit of armor. Learn of the tail of Sir Gawain of King Authors court and the Green Knight. Then you will hear the tail of the sly fox who sneaks toward a farm on a moonlight night to steal a chicken or two, but the old Tomten guards the farm.

The class is free and is open to kids from 1-99! While the class is free we do ask you to sign up so we know how many to expect for the event.

Folklore of St. Nicholas and Krampus

Holiday Traditions New & Old

Krampus is a horned, anthropomorphic figure, in Alpine folklore, who during the Christmas season scares children who have misbehaved, assisting Saint Nicholas. The pair visit children on the night of the 5th December, and Saint Nicholas rewards the well-behaved children with modest gifts such as oranges, dried fruit, walnuts and chocolate whilst the badly behaved ones only receive punishment with birch rods.

At the end of the class kids can learn how to make boot wreaths to set out for Saint Nicholas arrival on the 5th!

Meet “Old World” Santa!

Saturday November 26, 2022 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM

Did you know that Santa did not always wear a red suit? Our old-world St. Nicholas will be here for the ‘Folklore of St. Nicholas & Krampus’ and the ‘Kids Boot Wreath’ making class to help introduce you to this old traditional version of Santa. He will be available for kids to meet and take picture with until 2 PM. So, stop by to enjoy all the day’s activities.

Come Celebrate a Viking Jol (Yule) with us!

The Norse people celebrated a midwinter feast which is now called Jul in Scandinavia and Yule in other countries. We’ll learn how the old Scandinavian celebrated during this solstice festival to celebrate the rebirth of the sun. From what they did, drank & ate to traditions like Julbucking, Yule log and the Yule goat to the Yule Tree, the precursor to our Christmas tree today. Matt will cover how these traditions continued being celebrated from Medieval times to today. To make it extra fun, Matt will be dressed in traditional Viking garb.

Kids Class: How to Make a Pinecone Christmas Tree

Saturday, December 17, 2022 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM

In this years kids class, we will be making a pinecone Christmas trees. They can keep their creation or give as a gift. Kids of all ages will get a chance to decorate a small terracotta pot in any holiday theme they choose and decorate a large pinecone to look like a tree. The tree is then placed in the pot with some moss to have your own small Christmas tree.

Penobscot Bay Bell Ringers Concert

Saturday, December 17, 2022 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM

​Come sit and enjoy a holiday hand bell concert from the Penobscot Bay Bell Ringers. The Penobscot Bay Ringers is a five-octave hand bell choir that performs throughout the Midcoast area. Today they will entertain us with some holiday music, so grab a cup of hot chocolate and sit back and enjoy the free show.
